About me.

Daniel (Danny) Hentz is a multimedia storyteller from Western Massachusetts who currently resides in the Boston area. For the past eight years, he has combined high-quality editorial photography and photojournalism with writing to enhance scientific narratives in conservation and exploration for organizations and individuals across New England. A self-taught photographer, Danny’s passion led him to pursue a master’s degree at Northeastern University’s Journalism School, where he developed his identity as a “backpack journalist” while reporting abroad in Cuba and Panama. His written and visual work earned him a regional student Emmy for a digital magazine produced in Cuba, Detrás Del Bloqueo.

For the past five years, Danny has served as a Digital Content Producer for the Communications Department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod. There, he works as a lead editorial photographer, staff writer, newsletter editor, and producer of the institution’s first podcast, Oceanus. His work has taken him aboard ocean-class research vessels and to remote research stations in the Caribbean and along the U.S. East Coast, documenting cutting-edge ocean science, environmental stewards, and the blue economy.

When he’s not working for WHOI, Danny operates as a freelance photographer, serving science media and tech innovators in New England and beyond.
